Family Tree in Progress

This tattoo started out as flash (traditional heart) on right shoulder with banner (no name initially included) and was done in 1990. In 1994, the name "Allen" was added to the banner for my then boyfriend and now husband. After approx. 12 years, the tattoo had faded considerably, and I began thinking about re-doing the heart, but along the way, I began adding other elements...first, an owl was added to symbolize my daughter, Sarah...then a crow was added for my other daughter, Emily. Both sit on a branch running left to right placed behind the heart in the center. Later, banners and ribbons were added along with their names, and finally, the original heart was redone completely. Within the heart is hidden a capital "L" representing my ex-wife, Linda. I don't know where the "L" appears as I asked the tattoo artist not to tell me. The piece is almost complete, it only needs the addition of a pirate underneath the rest of the tattoo to represent my grandson, Seamus.

This tattoo represents my family to me,and it is my favorite tattoo of all. It's very likely I will again add to the tattoo if my daughter Emily has children in the future.

My next tattoo after completing this family tree tattoo is some sort of bat, I haven't completely chosen a style or location yet...but am enjoying the planning....

A Beautiful Piece of Family History
by: Anonymous

This is a beautiful piece of family history chronicalling the generations of your family. If it's not to shocking a suggestion, I do hope you will consider preserving it for future generations.

i love the way it developed. but i have to add in that, the pirate seemed kind of random, like it wouldnt go with the arm, i would maybe try to stick with birds, or animals at least. to tie in with the pirate theme, maybe you could do a parrot with a patch over its eye instead. but i really do think that a pirate would take away from the beauty and unity of the piece.
